What Is Prenatal Paternity DNA Testing?

Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) testing determines whether an alleged father is the biological father before the baby is born.

The test analyzes small fragments of the baby's DNA (cell-free fetal DNA) that naturally circulate in the mother's bloodstream. A blood sample is collected from the mother, and a cheek swab is collected from the alleged father.

Unlike older prenatal testing methods, NIPP does not require amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) and poses no additional risk to the pregnancy.

How Early Can the Test Be Performed?

Prenatal paternity testing can typically be performed as early as 7 weeks of pregnancy, depending on the laboratory's requirements.

If you're unsure how far along you are, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider before scheduling your appointment.

Who Can Be Tested?

A standard prenatal paternity test includes:

  • Pregnant Mother

  • Alleged Father

The mother's blood sample is collected by a qualified healthcare professional, and the alleged father's DNA is usually collected using a painless cheek (buccal) swab.

Why Choose a Non-Invasive Prenatal Test?

Requires only a maternal blood sample

Does not disturb the pregnancy

Eliminates the risks associated with amniocentesis and CVS

Provides highly accurate results

Can be performed early in pregnancy
